商社と造船所で長年働き、2年半前に会社生活にピリオドを打ち、その後現在までは個人「勝手」事務所＜モリシップラン・オフィス＞として、フリーで気ままな活動をしております。　会社時代は、「仕事第一」という目安で動くことが多かったのに対し、今や、「自分が本当に好きなこと、これまでやりたくてもやれなかったこと、もっと文化交流とか社会への参画を！　そして若い世代につなげられる動きを！」と言う目安で動けるのが楽しいですね。 会社生活引退後も、色々なお付き合いや会合もあり、立ち位置をはっきりさせる方が良いとの考えで、新たに名刺を作りました。

After a long span of time of business life, working first at an international trading house and then at a shipbuilding company, both typically old-economy type operations, I retired 2.5 years ago, and shifted the focus of my life perspective from “Strictly business, not much of hobby or play unless somehow tied to business” to “Relax, think more about the society and the family, and do something – even a little something – for, and with, the society”. In other words, I wanted to be part of the society, not just part of a company.
Then, I got my new name cards printed so that people could identify what sort of a guy I am and what I am doing, or trying to do, in that new environment and in that mindset. This is the photo of my name card:

I do ship-related business as and when opportunity arises.

翻訳本「ザ・シッピング・マン」

翻訳をやっており、具体例は、昨年アマゾンから発売してもらった「ザ・シッピング・マン」。　新たに他の本の翻訳作業中。

I do translation. A fruit: publishing the Japanese version of “The Shipping Man – A Novel”. I’m currently discussing with an E-Book company to run “The Shipping Man” online, and other books.

日本の音楽を世界で楽しむ…

現在、日本の歌の「雰囲気訳」に凝っております。　日本の素晴らしい歌を海外に紹介するために、モトウタの歌詞の雰囲気を活かした訳詞で、リズム、音符に乗っており、楽しく歌ってもらえると自負。　国際文化交流に市民レベルでいくばくかの貢献ができればと。　趣味は歌う事で、日本の歌に加えて、これら自作の訳詞での歌や、本来の外国の歌を、カラオケで、あるいは生バンドで歌わせてもらっています。　モチロン、お金を払って。

I do what I call “Atmospheric Translation” of Japanese songs. I do it mainly for the cultural exchange between Japan and foreign countries, by introducing good Japanese songs to friends overseas. I enjoy singing myself these Japanese songs with English lyrics, in addition to straight-forward foreign songs, at Karaoke clubs and live band sessions, all for fun, unpaid (who would?). I pay to sing.

「ニューヨークタイムズ・ルールによる英語クロスワード・パズル」

ところで、私のもう一つの趣味は英語クロスワード・パズル。 英語クロスワード・パズルとの出会いは、1967年ニューヨーク、当時、海外研修で派遣されていた現地の船会社で、男性スタッフは船の仕事のイロハを教えてくれ、女性秘書たちは、ランチタイムなどで、クロスワード・パズルの解き方の手ほどきをしてくれたもの。　それ以来やみつきになり、今になってもパズルから手が離せない。　この面での成果物は、ちょっと昔、1997年発刊（山下出版）の「ニューヨークタイムズ・ルールによる英語クロスワード・パズル」。

By the way, one other hobby of mine is English crossword puzzles. My encounter with the English crossword puzzles dates back many years when I worked on a traineeship of shipping business in New York City. While the bosses at the office taught me the ABC of shipping business, the secretaries there taught me how to tackle crossword puzzles during lunch breaks. And I took a great interest in them, never giving up until today. I got an English crossword puzzle book (Japanese clues – English answers, or some easy English – English puzzles) published in 1997.

My nickname, Morris, was given by my boss at this office, so quite a few of my old friends call me by that nickname. Call me that way, if you please. So, I’m today opening a blog where I want to convey my ideas to you all and chat with you about all these topics under the banner name of “Morris’ BILOG”. By “BILOG”, I wanted to mean “Bilingual Log”, so I can exchange information and friendship with my friends from various foreign countries, as well as from Japan.
