Spring has gone and summer’s around.
Look! Those white-bleached cloths,
Hung to dry up in a queue,
Along the slope of Mount Kagu.
(Empress Jito, Vol.1-28)
“Kaguyama” (Mount Kagu = Kaguyama is written in Chinese characters in two ways – one being to literally indicate “A mount endowed with an aroma”, the other “A mount with eternal aroma”) is one of the hills and mounts which rise from Nara Bonchi (Basin), and was deemed the most sacred and symbolic to the eye of people there.
The maker of the poem, Empress Jito, will have wanted to show and declare to the people the turn of the season for the year, observing out the way of life of the people themselves.
