O’er the sound of waves,
A boat being rowed away
From Irago shore –
Would my dear love be onboard,
Ruffled by the roaring sea?
(Vol.1-42)
Both of these songs, Vol.40 and 42 ,were sung by Kakinomoto-no Hitomaro while the then-ruling Empress Jito and her entourage (including Hitomaro’s wife?) made a trip to Ise Province where the Imperial ancestors were = and still are in this 21st century = enshrined, and Hitomaro and other officers stayed back to manage the home matters. We can see the frequent and emotion-filled messages in the form of Tanka’s having been made and perhaps sent over courier to the Mission on the trip.
