In contrast with most other Tanka poems in Man-Yoh-Shuh collection, the series of Kurohito’s poems are featured often with an objective and descriptive flow of phrases, rather than mostly praises of Emperors and Empresses appearing in other poems. In this piece too, you will notice the time sequence of phrases, ending with the boat disappearing around the cape – denoting an uncertainty of the future of the boat and of the songwriter’s state of mind while on a trip away from home.
