VOLUME-3
☆Dazai Outpost Office Chief The Lord Ootomo-no Tabito’s poem:
One of 13 odes to Sake:

験なき
 ものを思はずは
  一坏の
濁れる酒を
 飲むべくあるらし
(大伴旅人卿 巻3-338)

Shirushi naki
 Monowo omohazuha
  Hitotsukino
Nigoreru sake-wo
 Nomubeku arurashi

Rather than brooding
Over all those idle things,
You might as well sip
A bowl of Cloudy Sake –
It’d be much better, so they say!
(Vol.3-338)

A good excuse for drinking – now and past! Cloudy Sake (nigorizake) is a raw sake made from under-refined rice, and comes appearing in a cloudy, dull quality, yet giving a taste of native life. Nigorizake may correspond to bisque, if we liken Seishu(clear sake) to consommé, picking soups, for instance.
