モリシップランの万葉集英訳

VOLUME-4
☆Nakatomi-no Iratsume’s poem:

海の底
 奥を深めて
  わが思へる
君には逢わむ
 年は経ぬとも
 (中臣郎女 巻4-676)

Watano soko
 Okiwo fukamete
  Waga moheru
Kiminiha awamu
 Toshiha henutomo

With my love to you,
As deep as the rock bottom
Of the deep ocean,
I would still go and see you,
Howe’er many years it might take!
(Vol.4-676)

By far the most important figure when it comes to Man-Yoh-Shuh is Ootomo-no Yakamochi, chief compiler/editor of this Collection, and the maker of the biggest number of poems here, and Poem No. Vol.3-464 is one by him among many others. It is his elegy dedicated to the death of “one of his wives”.

Nakatomi, the poetess here, is yet another woman who is said to have had a romantic relationship with Yakamochi, who seems to be an enormously popular guy among women of the time.
