VOLUME-8
☆Yamabe-no Akahito’s poem:

春の野に
 すみれ摘みにと
  来しわれそ
野をなつかしみ
 一夜寝にける
 (山部赤人 巻8-1424)

Haru-no noni
 Sumire tsuminito
  Kishi ware-so
No-wo natsukashimi
 Hitoyo nenikeru

This should’ve been a hike,
To pick those violet flowers
In this late spring time –
Fields were full of sweet mem’ries,
We slept on there overnight…
(Vol.8-1424)

A theory has it that Yamabe-no Akahito came from Yamabe County of Iyo Province (nowadays Ehime Pref.). Born and brought up in an idyllic countryside in Shikoku Island, coming up to the Yamato Capital (Nara Pref., now) could have been a strenuous life, especially so, as he was working as a key Government officer, having to cope with a stressful bureaucratic affairs and complex human relationship in the big (then) city. Many of Akahito’s poems relate to the fauna and flora.
