Every time I come
See the site of Mama’s Well,
My heart’d come to swell,
Think of Maiden Tekona
Stomp the ground and draw water.
(Vol.9-1808)

So, this is a poem about Maiden Tekona and Mama’s Well. As I said in the preface of this Poem Collection, I live in Mama, Ichikawa City, Chiba Pref., and it was a nice feeling to realize our town’s name is cited in several poems of 1300 years old.
As mentioned in my remark for the poem Vol.3-432, Maiden Tekona’s story is handed down through generations among the people in the local community as well as among Government offices, and even today, a site of Tekona’s Well is identified and a simple monument stands beside the gate of Kamei-In, a small temple, in Mama. Besides, you may visit Tekona Shrine nearby, which is said to enshrine the grave of Maiden Tekona.
