☆Yamanoue-no Okura’s poem:

翔るなす
 あり通いつつ
  見らめども
人こそ知らね
 松は知るらむ
(巻2-145)

Kakeru nasu
 Ari kayoitutu
  Miramedomo
Hitokoso shirane
 Matsuha shiruramu

You must be up there,
I dream the spirit of yours
Flying in the air.
Men will ne’er perceive it soar,
Yet pine trees will only know…
(Vol.2-145)

IThis is a poetic tribute to the demise of Prince Arima who had been convicted of treason, and executed on death penalty. Okura says in his poem here that he or people around cannot pursue the spirit of this beloved prince, but only the pine trees could perceive it soaring to the sky.
