モリシップランの万葉集英訳

VOLUME-4
☆Ootomo-no Yotsutsuna’s poem:

月夜よし
 川の音清し
  いざここに
行くも行かぬも
 遊びて行かむ
 (防人佑=サキモリノジョウ=大伴四綱 巻4-571)

Tsukuyo yoshi
 Kawano ne kiyoshi
  Iza kokoni
Yukumo yukanumo
 Asobite yukamu

It’s moon-lit tonight,
With a brooklet murmuring,
Shining at our side.
We’re here to see you going,
And yet for all to enjoy…
(Ootomo-no Yotutuna, Assistant Chief of Sakimori Soldier Affairs Vol.4-571)

Of the several songs appearing here as the farewell messages to Ootomo-no Tabito
returning to Yamato Capital, say, triumphantly due to the promotion, this particular
song is not really submissive or subservient, but rather carries an air of independence
and an even ground, perhaps because the maker of this song is in charge of affairs of
Sakimori, the defense soldiers, and people deem the position worth a certain
homage, irrespective of the difference in the official ranking ?
